Pausanias, Description of Greece 9.31.7–9 — Narcissus at Donacon

Pausanias reports the familiar reflection version but objects to the literal misrecognition premise, then gives an alternate version in which Narcissus knowingly uses his reflection as a likeness of his dead twin sister. This supports image-as-substitute more robustly than simple vanity or stupidity.
