Magi and the Star — Matthew 2

Gerard David and workshop painting of the Adoration of the Magi
Historical Magi artwork grounding the Matthew 2 cultural record.
Conventional Reading
Matthew 2 describes Magi who see a star, travel to Judea, encounter Herod, and then find the child Jesus. Christian art developed a long Adoration of the Magi tradition around this episode.

Geomytha Reading

Geomytha reads the star as orientation preceding possession or throne: the Magi become followers before they become gift-bearers, while Herod represents threatened kingship. In the fire-return frame, gold, frankincense, and myrrh remain clean while they are offerings; the distortion begins when gift becomes title, proof, or possession.
